Renee Savage opened Renee's House of Quilting in January of 2004 in an old 1912 farmhouse in Williamsburg, Michigan, just east of the Turtle Creek casino and Traverse City along M-72.
The farmhouse, surrounded by 100 old maple trees and a big wrap-around porch, faces away from the road and the shop is actually the back of the farmhouse. The inside is as pleasant as the outside and based on the assortment of fabrics, one could easily spend hours trying to decide what to take home. Renee's shop specializes in Asian, beautiful brights, batiks, and fabrics you don't find at other shops, so you have to see the great selection to appreciate it. Since their opening, the shop has tripled the amount of fabric expanded their books and patterns and is now looking to increase their quilted clothing classes.
Renee's motto is "Never too busy to pass out a smile" and the staff is very knowledgeable and creative. The shop uses creative displays with completed samples (SEE PICTURES BELOW!!!!) to help customers visualize the finished product and motivate everyone to try new things. Renee suggests quilter's try something new but start small so they don't become overwhelmed by the project. "And remember, there are no mistakes, only creative attitudes".
Renee and her staff encourage quilter's to bring in their finished projects so they can see what their customer's imaginations can create, making for more opportunities to visit with customers and share ideas.
Renee always plans to do something special several times each year to keep things interesting. The next big event will be a tent sale in September.
Renee's is one of Mary's (my lovely wife and devoted quilter) favorite quilt and fabric shops in Michigan. The four hour drive from Port Huron is worth the trip and makes for a great weekend getaway. Check the ShopFacts link above for a map and other information.
